Labour believes fairness must be at the heart of any cuts to spending. Instead of hitting lower and middle-income families so hard, we would ensure the banks made a larger contribution to tackling the deficit and driving forward growth. Those who bear the greatest responsibility for the economic crisis must be seen to shoulder their fair share of the burden.
George Osborne’s Spending Review is unravelling as the Institute for Fiscal Studies took apart his claims to be fair and progressive.
Alan Johnson MP, Labour's Shadow Chancellor, said:
"It's now clear children have been hit hardest by this Government. And it's a double whammy. At home, they lose the most from George Osborne's tax and spend changes. And at school, children will see the money available for their education cut."
